Konami released Baseball Advance for the Game Boy Advance in 2002, a time when handheld sports games were starting to feel more complete. It was one of the better baseball options on the system, offering a solid, no frills experience that fit right in your pocket.
You control all nine players, handling pitching, batting, and fielding. The main goal is to win games through good pitching strategy and timely hitting. Two mechanics stand out: the camera shifts from a classic behind the batter perspective when you're at the plate to an overhead view when you're tracking fly balls in the field, and fielding requires quick reflexes to get under pop ups and make strong throws. The pacing is brisk, and the difficulty feels fair, challenging you without becoming frustrating. It feels satisfying to connect with a fastball and then make a diving catch the very next inning.
