Game Overview

I remember picking up Batman: The Caped Crusader for the Amiga back in 1988. Ocean Software published it, and it was one of those games that really stood out on the platform at the time. It didn't try to be the flashiest thing on the system, but it had a certain charm with its comic book panel presentation, splitting the screen to show Batman's actions and the villain's reactions simultaneously. It felt like playing through an interactive issue of Detective Comics, which was a neat idea for its day.

You control Batman through two separate missions, each with its own villain: stopping the Penguin's army of robotic penguins or rescuing Robin from the Joker. The gameplay is side-scrolling, with exploration, combat, and light puzzle solving. You move screen by screen, using your fists, Batarangs, and a grappling hook to navigate and fight thugs. The pacing is deliberate, and the difficulty can be unforgiving, with enemies respawning quickly and limited continues. Playing it feels tense and methodical, like you're actually piecing together a case while under pressure.
