BattleCity on the Game Boy was a portable take on the NES classic, developed and published by Nintendo. It arrived without much fanfare, fitting neatly into the library of straightforward action games that defined the early handheld experience. You got exactly what you expected: tanks, mazes, and a lot of things to shoot.

You control a small, green tank from a top-down perspective, navigating blocky mazes while enemy tanks spawn from a central base. Your main goal is to protect your eagle emblem at all costs; if it gets destroyed, the game ends. You blast enemy tanks with your cannon, and you can also shoot through certain brick walls to carve new paths or create shortcuts. Power-ups occasionally drop, letting you upgrade your firepower, speed up your tank, or gain temporary invincibility. The pacing is relentless; tanks pour in steadily, and the screen quickly fills with bullets and obstacles. It feels like a constant, tense scramble to control the map before you get overwhelmed.
