Be-Bop Highschool came out on the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1988, published by Data East. It's an adaptation of a manga series, and it fits right in with the era's focus on bringing comic book stories to the console, though it never really broke through outside of Japan. You play as one of two high school tough guys, navigating a side-scrolling world that feels more like a series of interactive comic panels than a traditional action game.

You control either Kato or Nakama, moving from screen to screen to explore the school and town. The main goal is to build your reputation by picking fights with rival students and gangs, which you do through a simple menu-driven combat system when you bump into an enemy. You have to manage your stamina and courage stats during these encounters, making choices that affect the outcome. The pacing is deliberate, with a lot of reading (in Japanese) and decision-making rather than frantic action. It feels like stumbling through a choose-your-own-adventure book where every wrong turn gets you punched in the face.
