Beastlord on the Amiga is one of those games that looks like a straightforward side-scrolling beat 'em up at first—until you realize there’s way more going on. You play as this kid called the Beastlord (because, yeah, you can talk to animals), and your job is to free three guardians—a unicorn, a hawk, and a literal beam of light—from the Lord of Darkness. Sounds simple, but the levels are sprawling, full of hidden paths and weird little puzzles.

Combat’s basic—you punch, kick, and jump on orcs—but the real challenge is figuring out what to do next. You’ll be trading items with random NPCs, waiting for nightfall because some doors only open then, and constantly hunting for food because your energy drains way too fast. The menu system’s a bit clunky (classic Amiga), but there’s something satisfying about finally getting that one key item after backtracking through half the level.

It’s janky in places, but if you like games where you actually have to think between fights, this one’s got charm. Just don’t forget to eat.
