Game Overview

Black Hornet came out on the Amiga in 1991 from Hi-Tec Software. It was one of those vertical-scrolling shooters that tried to do something a little different, putting you in control of a stealth fighter instead of a more traditional sci-fi craft. It fit right in with the era's push for more detailed graphics and complex mechanics.

You pilot the Black Hornet, a nimble aircraft, through enemy territory, shooting down planes and bombing ground targets. Your main goal is to complete each mission by destroying all key objectives while managing your limited fuel supply. Two signature mechanics are the need to periodically land on carriers or airfields to refuel, and the ability to upgrade your weapons by collecting power-ups dropped by certain enemies. The pacing is tense; you are constantly watching your fuel gauge while dodging a steady stream of enemy fire. It feels like a careful balance between aggressive combat and survivalist resource management.
