Body Count (Beta) is one of those weird, forgotten Sega Genesis gems that somehow slipped through the cracks—probably because it never got a proper release outside this rough European beta. But man, it’s a riot if you’re into chaotic top-down shooters.

You start off with this chunky little dude (or dudette, hard to tell) armed with a machine gun, and within seconds, you’re swarmed by enemies from all sides. The controls are simple—just run, shoot, and try not to get cornered—but the chaos escalates fast. Explosions, screen-filling firepower, and this gnarly synth soundtrack that sounds like it’s straight out of a ‘90s action flick.

It’s got that Smash TV vibe but with Sega’s signature arcade roughness. Some of the weapons feel overpowered in the best way, like the flamethrower that just melts everything. Yeah, it’s janky in places (beta life), but that almost adds to the charm. If you’ve ever dug through old ROMs or love obscure shooters, this one’s a fun little time capsule.

Definitely not polished, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want from a lost Genesis prototype.
