Captain America and the Avengers came out on the Sega Genesis in 1992, published by Data East. It was one of those side-scrolling beat 'em ups that felt right at home on the system, a straightforward arcade port that let you jump straight into the action without much fuss. You could always count on finding a game like this in a friend's collection, ready for a quick session.
You pick from four heroes: Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, or Vision. The goal is to fight through screen after screen of enemies to stop the Red Skull. You use each character's unique weapon, like Cap's shield or Hawkeye's arrows, and you can call in assists from other Avengers for a quick screen-clearing attack. The levels are linear, moving you from left to right through city streets and enemy bases, and the difficulty can get pretty punishing, especially with the constant enemy spawns. It feels chaotic and a little messy, but in a way that makes you want to try just one more time.
