Captain America & The Avengers came out on the Super Nintendo in 1993, published by Data East. It was one of those side-scrolling beat 'em ups that felt right at home on the system, where you and a friend could team up to punch through waves of enemies. The game didn't try to reinvent the wheel, but it captured the comic book action of the era pretty well.
You control one of four Avengers: Captain America, Iron Man, Hawkeye, or Vision, each with their own basic and special attacks. The main goal is to fight through screen after screen of Hydra agents and robots to eventually confront the Red Skull. Signature mechanics include using Captain America's shield to block projectiles, finding health and weapon power-ups hidden in destructible objects, and navigating occasional vehicle-based shooter sections. The pacing is fast, though the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in later stages. It feels straightforward and satisfying, especially when playing with someone else.
