I picked up Captain Tsubasa: Eikou no Kiseki on Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a time when handheld soccer games were either too simple or overly complicated. This one, developed by Konami, found a nice middle ground, capturing the spirit of the manga without drowning in menus. It felt right at home on the GBA, a system packed with ambitious adaptations, and it stood out for actually trying to replicate the over-the-top action of the source material.

You control Tsubasa and his teammates, moving your player icon across a top-down field to intercept passes or challenge for the ball. The main objective is to win matches by outscoring your opponent, but the real fun comes from building up your special meter. Once it's full, you can trigger dramatic cut-ins and execute super shots or dribbles that often decide a match in one explosive moment. The pacing is quick, with matches that rarely drag, though the AI can put up a stiff challenge on higher difficulties. It feels like directing your own sports anime episode, where every possession could end with the net rippling.
