I first ran into Chack'n Pop on the NES back in 1985, a game Taito put out. It was part of that early wave of NES titles, the kind that felt experimental, built on simple concepts that could either hook you or drive you up a wall. It definitely had a familiar look if you knew Bubble Bobble, sharing some of that DNA, but it carved out its own strange little corner.

You control this round, chicken-like creature named Chack'n, and your job is to rescue the little heart-shaped Chacklets trapped in each single-screen room. You move from screen to screen, planting bombs to destroy the monsters blocking your path. The real trick is the pacing; you have to be quick because the eggs the monsters drop will eventually hatch into even more enemies, turning a calm situation into pure chaos in seconds. It feels like a constant, frantic scramble against a clock you can't see.
