You control one of several mercenaries, each with unique weapons and abilities, navigating through screen-by-screen environments filled with mechanical enemies and environmental hazards. The main objective is to survive each area, collect gold and power-ups, and ultimately destroy the Chaos Engine itself. Signature mechanics include cooperative play (where friendly fire is always a risk), strategic character selection for tackling different obstacles, and using earned cash to upgrade your firepower and mobility between stages. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty is steep, demanding careful movement and quick aiming. It feels like a tense, clattering race through a world that is actively trying to dismantle you.
