I picked up Charlie Blast's Territory for the Nintendo 64 back in 1999, a puzzle game developed by Realtime Associates. It was a time when the N64 had plenty of action and adventure titles, but this one stood out for its methodical, brain-teasing approach. It didn't try to compete with the big platformers or shooters; it just offered a different kind of challenge.
You control Charlie, a demolition expert, and your goal is to clear each screen of colored blocks by placing bombs strategically. The main mechanics involve careful bomb placement, timing explosions to chain reactions, and avoiding getting yourself cornered. The pacing is slow and thoughtful, with difficulty that ramps up steadily, demanding real precision in later stages. It feels satisfying to finally solve a tricky level after several attempts, watching everything blow up exactly as planned.
