Game Overview

Chester Field: Ankoku Shin heno Chousen is one of those NES games that slipped under the radar—probably because it never left Japan until the Aeon Genesis translation. You play as Chester, a sword-swinging hero who jumps like he’s got springs in his boots, navigating shadowy castles and dodging traps that feel like they were designed by someone with a grudge. The first time I played, I lost three lives just figuring out the timing on those pendulum axes.

It’s got that classic Castlevania vibe—moody, punishing, and weirdly satisfying when you finally nail a tricky section. Some of the enemy designs are downright creepy, like that boss that’s basically a floating skull with too many eyes. The translation patch makes the story actually understandable, which is nice, though let’s be real: you’re here for the challenge, not the dialogue. If you miss the days when games didn’t hold your hand, this one’s a solid time capsule.
