Pick a warlord, move troops on the map, then dive into chaotic side-scrolling battles—lose a fight and watch your kingdom start falling apart. Those little 8-bit army clashes hit different.

Chik Bik Ji Jin - Saam Gwok Ji (or just "Three Kingdoms" if you're not up for the full Cantonese title) is one of those weird, ambitious NES games that somehow works. You start off picking a warlord—Liu Bei feels like the obvious choice, but Cao Cao’s sneaky tactics grew on me after a few failed campaigns.
It’s half chess, half button-mashing chaos. One minute you’re moving units on a grid like some ancient general, the next you’re thrown into side-scrolling battles where your spearmen actually matter. The AI doesn’t mess around—lose a key fight, and suddenly your whole territory’s crumbling. Graphics are pure 8-bit, but there’s something satisfying about watching your little pixel armies clash.
Not gonna lie, the menus are janky by modern standards, and the translation’s rough. But if you stick with it, there’s a weirdly deep strategy game here. Just save often unless you enjoy replaying hours of troop movements.
