Chubby Cherub came out for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985, published by Bandai. It was one of those early NES titles that felt a little off the beaten path, not quite fitting with the usual platformers or action games that were starting to define the console. You played as a chubby little angel, which was already a strange choice, and the whole thing had this odd, almost dreamlike quality that made it stand out, for better or worse.

You control the cherub, who flies from left to right through a series of suburban and nighttime stages. Your main goal is to reach your girlfriend at the end of each level, but to do that you need to collect floating candy hearts to keep your energy up. If you run out of hearts, you fall from the sky. Along the way, you dodge enemy dogs that leap from below and birds that dive from above; you can defeat them by throwing hearts, which is your only form of attack. The pacing is slow and deliberate, with a lot of careful hovering and timing your throws. It feels a little clumsy and repetitive, but there's a peculiar charm in its weirdness that keeps you curious for one more try.
