College Slam on Game Boy came out in 1995 from Iguana Entertainment, a time when portable sports games were often stripped down versions of their console counterparts. It was a handheld take on the arcade basketball style popularized by games like NBA Jam, but focused entirely on college teams instead of the pros.
You control a team of two players, moving up and down the court to score baskets against the opposing college. The main goal is to win each game and advance through the tournament brackets. Signature mechanics include performing exaggerated, high flying dunks that can shatter the backboard, as well as stealing the ball with aggressive defensive moves. The pacing is fast, with constant back and forth action, though the difficulty can spike sharply against tougher opponents. It feels like a quick, chaotic pick up game that captures some of the rowdy energy of college basketball.
