Columns III came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993, developed and published by Sega. It was one of the many puzzle games competing for attention on the system, a straightforward but polished entry in a crowded genre.
You control the descent of colored gem trios, rotating them to create matches of three or more in a row. The main goal is to clear gems and prevent the stack from reaching the top of the playfield. Key mechanics include the Flash mode, triggered by large chain reactions, which lets you send extra garbage blocks to an opponent's screen; and the competitive two player mode, where you can directly interfere with a rival's progress. The pace is methodical but can spike into frantic urgency as the blocks pile up. It feels like a tense, colorful battle of wits, especially when playing against someone else.
