Columns III: Revenge of the Gems is one of those Genesis games that slipped under the radar, which is a shame because it takes the simple joy of matching gems and cranks it up to 11. You’re still stacking and lining up colors like the original, but now there’s this frantic energy—gems drop faster, combos chain harder, and the screen fills with these little explosions of color when you clear a set.
The Flash mode is where I lost hours—it’s pure adrenaline, speeding up until your fingers can barely keep up. And the Puzzle mode? Way trickier than I expected, like someone took a Tetris challenge and gave it a Sega makeover. But the real fun is in two-player, where every move you make can mess with your friend’s board in the best (or worst) possible way.
It’s got that early ‘90s arcade vibe—bright, loud, and just the right amount of chaotic. If you ever played the first Columns and thought, “This could use more spark,” well, here it is.
