Play Cowboy Kid Online
NES action-RPG where you play a young sheriff hunting gangs across towns, mixing side-scrolling combat with light RPG elements and minigames. Janky but full of personality.
Cowboy Kid came out on the NES in 1992, published by Romstar. It was one of those late-era releases that tried to stretch the hardware a bit further, offering a mix of action and role-playing elements that felt a little more ambitious than the straightforward platformers of the earlier part of the decade. You don't hear about it too often, but it has a certain charm if you're into that era of experimentation.
You control a young sheriff tasked with cleaning up a frontier overrun by outlaws. The game is structured around moving between towns and wilderness areas, fighting bandits with a six-shooter or a bow, and completing quests for townsfolk to earn money and better gear. Signature mechanics include screen-by-screen exploration, light character progression where you buy upgrades for your health and weapons, and occasional minigames like target shooting or gambling. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes slow, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly in certain areas. Playing it feels like a rough but earnest attempt to build a small open world within the strict limits of an 8-bit cartridge.
