I picked up Crash Bandicoot Bakusou! Nitro Kart for the Game Boy Advance back in 2003, a game developed by Vicarious Visions and published by Universal Interactive. It was one of many kart racers on the system, but it stood out for bringing the chaotic energy of the Crash universe into a portable format. The game arrived during a time when the GBA was packed with platformers and racers, and this one tried to blend both in its own way.
You control Crash or one of his friends or rivals, racing across various tracks inspired by the series' locations. The main goal is straightforward: finish first while using items to disrupt opponents. Signature mechanics include drifting around corners to build a temporary speed boost and collecting wumpa fruit to charge a special super turbo. The pacing is quick, and the difficulty can spike on later courses, especially with aggressive AI. It feels satisfying to slide through a perfect turn and fire a missile at the kart ahead of you.
