I picked up Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure for my Game Boy Advance back in 2002, a time when getting a decent 3D-style platformer on a handheld felt like a minor miracle. Developed by Vicarious Visions, it was one of those games that made the GBA feel like more than just a portable SNES. It captured the spirit of the PlayStation originals surprisingly well, even on that small, unlit screen.
You control Crash, running, spinning, and jumping through linear levels split into distinct screens. The main goal is to stop Cortex by collecting the powerful crystals he's scattered, but you'll also hunt for gems and clear time trials. The gameplay mixes traditional side-scrolling with those classic chase sequences where the camera pulls back and you sprint toward the screen, dodging obstacles. It's challenging, sometimes frustratingly so, with precise jumps and instant-death pits, but nailing a difficult section is incredibly satisfying. It feels like a genuine, condensed Crash experience you can take anywhere.
