Cross Fire (Proto) is one of those NES games that makes you wonder how it didn’t get more attention. It’s got that classic run-and-gun feel—like if Contra had a scrappier, slightly rougher cousin. The controls are tight, the action’s nonstop, and the weapons actually feel satisfying to use (the spread shot is my go-to). Boss fights pop up just when you think you’ve caught your breath, and the whole thing has that gritty arcade vibe where every pixel feels like it’s trying to kill you.

It’s a shame this one never got a full release, because even the prototype nails that ‘one more try’ itch. If you’re into retro shooters that don’t hold your hand, this is a blast from the past that deserves a shot.
