Game Overview

Cross Hunter - Monster Hunter Version (Japan) is one of those weird little Game Boy Color games that somehow sticks with you. You grab a crossbow, run through these bright, chunky pixel levels, and blast monsters that look like they escaped from a late-night anime fever dream. It’s not exactly deep—more like an arcade cabinet stuffed into a cartridge—but there’s something weirdly satisfying about how it controls. The crossbow has just enough weight to make shots feel punchy.

I’ll admit, the first few levels trick you into thinking it’s mindless. Then you hit a swarm of those flying eyeball things and suddenly you’re dodging like your life depends on it. The music’s all bleeps and bloops in the best way, too. It’s the kind of game you play for 10 minutes and end up finishing in one sitting because the next stage always has some new ridiculous enemy to wreck. Definitely a cult favorite for a reason.
