Game Overview

So, Crystals of Arborea—this old-school Amiga RPG is basically the rough draft for the later Ishar games, but don’t let that fool you. It’s got this weird, moody charm. You play as Jarel, an elf prince (or close enough) trying to rally a party of six against Morgoth, who’s basically the god of throwing tantrums and corrupting everyone. The world’s flooded, your kingdom’s the last holdout, and of course, you need to collect four elemental crystals to fix everything.

Gameplay’s a mix of 2D overworld wandering and 3D dungeon crawling, which felt pretty slick for its time. Combat’s turn-based but weirdly tactical—you’re moving each party member manually on a grid, so archers and mages can snipe from the back while your warriors brawl up close. It’s clunky in that late-’80s way, but there’s something satisfying about positioning your healer just out of reach while your tank takes the hits. Just don’t expect the polish of the later Ishar games—this one’s got more rough edges, but also more personality.

Oh, and good luck keeping your party alive early on. The difficulty’s got that classic ‘figure it out or die’ vibe.
