Crystals of Arborea came out in 1990 from Silmarils, a developer known for their ambitious MS-DOS titles that often blended genres. It was a time when games were experimenting with deeper worlds and more complex mechanics, and this one certainly tried to carve its own path.
You control Jarel, the last prince of a drowned kingdom, and must assemble a party of adventurers to retrieve four elemental crystals before a chaos god destroys everything. The game plays out screen by screen, with real time combat that requires careful positioning and resource management; your fighters engage up close while archers and mages support from the rear. Exploration is methodical, and the difficulty is unforgiving, often punishing mistakes with heavy losses. It feels like a desperate struggle for survival where every decision carries weight.
Each game uses different controls, most DOS games use the keyboard arrows. Some will use the mouse , "Alt" ,"Enter" and "Space bar".
