Play Darius II (Japan) Online
Pilot a little spaceship through waves of giant robot fish, dodging bullet hell while crab bosses try to laser you into space dust. The Genesis version’s a bit rough, but those branching paths still make each run feel fresh.
Darius II came out for the Sega Genesis in 1990, developed and published by Taito. It was part of that wave of arcade shooters that made their way to home consoles, offering a scaled down but still ambitious take on the coin-op experience. The game stood out with its widescreen presentation and aquatic sci-fi setting, something not many other titles on the system attempted at the time.
You control the Silver Hawk, a fighter spacecraft, moving through horizontally scrolling stages filled with robotic sea creatures. Your main goal is to survive each stage, defeat the mid-boss and end-level boss, and choose your path across a branching map. Key mechanics include collecting power-ups to upgrade your main shot and secondary weapons, like missiles or lasers, and using a screen-clearing bomb when overwhelmed. The pacing is relentless, with enemy patterns that demand quick reflexes and memorization. It feels tense and rewarding when you finally thread through a dense barrage and take down a multi-part boss.
