Play Dark Arena (U)(Eurasia) Online
You wake up in a rusty bunker with a peashooter, then five minutes later you're backpedaling through hallways while a chaingun melts robots into scrap. That GBA screen somehow holds all the explosions without bursting.
Dark Arena came out in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance, developed by Graphic State. It was part of that early wave of GBA shooters, a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate fast-paced action onto the small screen. The hardware had limits, but games like this pushed them.
You control a lone soldier fighting through alien-infested military bases. Your goal is to survive each level, find keycards to open new areas, and eventually escape. The game uses screen-by-screen exploration, clearing rooms of enemies before moving on. Combat involves switching between a small arsenal of weapons, from a basic pistol to a rapid-fire chaingun, to handle different enemy types. The pacing is relentless; you are almost always low on health or ammo, making each encounter tense. It feels like a desperate scramble from one firefight to the next.
