Game Overview
Dark Castle on the Sega Genesis is one of those games that looks simple at first—until you realize how much precision it demands. You play as a lone adventurer storming the Black Knight’s haunted fortress, room by room, tossing rocks at bats, knights, and whatever else gets in your way. And yeah, rocks—no fancy swords here. The 360-degree aiming sounds cool until you fumble a throw and get swarmed by respawning enemies.
The levels are these tight, single-screen challenges with ropes to climb, trapdoors that drop you into who-knows-what, and enemies that just won’t stay dead. The hub system lets you pick your path, but good luck guessing which door leads to something manageable versus instant regret. It’s clunky in that old-school way where half the challenge is wrestling with the controls, but there’s something weirdly satisfying about finally clearing a room that wrecked you five times in a row.
Fair warning: by zone 5 or so, you’ll start questioning your life choices. The difficulty doesn’t mess around.
