Days of Thunder hit the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Beam Software and published by Mindscape. It was one of those early portable attempts to capture the feel of a big movie tie in, a time when any recognizable license on the small screen felt like a minor miracle. You didn't expect much, but you hoped it would at least be playable.
You control a stock car, maneuvering through a top down view of famous NASCAR tracks. The main goal is to win races by finishing first, which involves careful cornering and managing your car's wear. Key mechanics include a pit stop mini game where you must quickly direct your crew to change tires and refuel, and a drafting system that lets you slipstream behind opponents for a speed boost. The racing is surprisingly tight and the AI is aggressive, making even mid pack finishes a challenge. It feels like a genuine, if simplified, test of racing tactics on a tiny screen.
