In the Steps of Columbus is one of those Amiga games that sucked me in for hours without realizing it. You start as a Spanish conquistador (or Portuguese, if you pick that option—I always went Spanish first) sending ships to the New World, scrambling to claim land before rival nations do. The first few minutes are all about scouting islands, hoping you stumble on gold or fertile land instead of barren rock.
Once you find a decent spot, things get messy fast. You’re juggling settlers, building up towns, and trying not to piss off the locals—unless you’re ready to fight them. And you will fight. Pirates raid your trade routes, other nations snipe your colonies, and sometimes your own people get restless. The mouse controls make it smooth, but don’t expect a peaceful city-builder—this is more like a knife fight over resources, just with 16-bit ships and cannons.
I lost my first three games because I kept underestimating how fast the French would backstab me. Lesson learned.
