DJ Boy came out in 1990 for the Sega Genesis, developed by Kaneko. It was part of that early wave of beat 'em ups on the system, before the Streets of Rage series really defined the genre. You played as a roller-skating hero in a world that felt a little less polished than some of the bigger titles, but it had its own strange charm.
You control the titular DJ Boy, skating through urban stages and beating up gangs with punches, kicks, and special spinning attacks. The main goal is to clear each screen of enemies before moving forward. You collect coins dropped from defeated foes to spend between stages on power-ups, like a faster skateboard or improved attacks. The pacing is fairly quick, but the difficulty can spike with enemy swarms and some frustrating boss patterns. It feels like a scrappy, slightly unrefined brawler that relies more on chaotic energy than tight design.
