Don Doko Don came out for the NES in 1990, developed and published by Taito. It was part of that wave of late 80s, early 90s platformers that felt both familiar and just a little bit strange, with its own particular rhythm and rules.

You control a small character armed with a hammer, clearing screen after screen of enemies and destructible blocks. The main goal is straightforward: defeat every enemy on the screen to advance. Your hammer can smash blocks to find items or create pits; you can also stun enemies with a direct hit before finishing them off. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty builds steadily as levels introduce more complex enemy patterns and environmental hazards. It feels frantic but manageable, like carefully orchestrating little bursts of mayhem.
