Dossun! Ganseki Battle came out for the Super Nintendo in 1994, developed by Magifact. It was one of those lesser known puzzle games from the era, the kind you might stumble across in a rental store or see mentioned in a magazine. It didn't have the big name recognition of something like Tetris Attack, but it had its own distinct, almost aggressive take on the genre.

You control a little wizard at the bottom of the screen, and your main goal is to defeat an opponent wizard by sending garbage blocks their way. The core mechanic is matching three or more of the same item, like swords or books, which are constantly rising from the bottom. Matching items clears them from your side and sends those troublesome purple blocks over to your rival. You can also perform chains or combos to drop unbreakable rocks on them or clear entire rows at once, which is crucial because the pace gets frantic quickly. The game is unforgiving; if your stack reaches the top, it's over. It feels like a tense, magical duel where one wrong move can bury you.
