Drakkhen came out for the Super Nintendo in 1991, developed and published by Infogrames. It was one of the earlier RPGs on the system, arriving before many of the more polished titles that would define the genre on the console. The game stood out for its strange, ambitious scope and its willingness to try things that felt genuinely unusual at the time.
You control a party of four characters from an overhead perspective, exploring a large world screen by screen. Your main goal is to explore the continent, gather clues from townsfolk, and ultimately defeat the dragon Drakkhen. The combat is real-time; monsters appear on the map and you swing your sword or fire your bow at them directly. The day/night cycle changes the enemies you face, and the game is notoriously difficult, with cryptic progression and brutal enemy encounters. Playing it feels like stumbling through a beautiful, broken dream where nothing works quite like you expect it to.
