Game Overview

Duke Nukem Advance came out in 2002 for the Game Boy Advance, developed by Torus Games and published by Take-Two Interactive. It was part of that wave of portable adaptations trying to bring console-style action to a smaller screen, and it arrived right when the GBA library was filling up with ambitious, if sometimes compromised, versions of bigger games.

You control Duke Nukem through a series of maze-like levels, shooting aliens, finding keycards, and hunting for secrets. The main goal is to stop an alien invasion, level by level, using weapons like the shotgun and pipe bombs. Signature mechanics include screen-by-screen exploration, where you often backtrack to use newly acquired items, and a health system that relies on collecting armor and medkits. The pacing is methodical, and the difficulty can feel unforgiving due to limited saves and aggressive enemies. It feels like carrying a chunk of old-school PC shooting in your hands, jank and all.
