Play Empire of Steel (Europe) Online
Pilot a clunky mech through chaotic battles where overheating your weapons is just as dangerous as enemy fire—those missile salvos don’t come cheap.

Game Overview
Empire of Steel is one of those Genesis games that somehow slipped under the radar back in the day, which is a shame because it's got this weird, satisfying mix of mech combat and tactical hovercraft chaos. You start off in this clunky-but-deadly war machine, and within minutes you're weaving through enemy fire while trying not to overheat your weapons—because yeah, you can absolutely fry your own systems if you get trigger-happy.
The first mission throws you straight into the deep end: dodging turrets, picking off smaller drones, and figuring out that your default cannon is borderline useless against certain armor types. Took me a few deaths to realize I should've saved energy for the missile salvos instead. The upgrade system's simple but smart—you're always weighing whether to boost speed, armor, or firepower before the next mission, and there's no "perfect" loadout.
What really sells it is the atmosphere. The pixel art's gritty, all industrial wastelands and glowing reactor cores, and the soundtrack nails that SEGA synth vibe. It's not an easy game, but when you finally clear a mission by the skin of your thrusters, it feels earned. Just don't expect to brute-force your way through.
If you still have a Genesis hooked up (or a decent emulator), this one's a solid deep cut for fans of tactical shooters.
