Play Ex-Mutants Online
Swing a battle axe through Sluggtown's mutant slums, rescuing survivors while everything explodes into chunky gore. Lord Sluggo's waiting at the end like a radioactive mob boss.

Ex-Mutants came out for the Sega Genesis in 1992, developed by Malibu Interactive. It was part of that wave of early 90s action platformers that tried to blend comic book style with a gritty, post-apocalyptic setting. The game didn't redefine the genre, but it had a distinct look that made it stand out on a shelf full of brighter, more colorful titles.
You control one of two mutated heroes, armed with a battle axe or a bow, tasked with rescuing human survivors from a world overrun by mutants. The game progresses screen by screen, requiring you to clear each area of enemies before moving forward. Combat is straightforward but messy; your attacks send mutant chunks flying across the screen. The main objective is to fight through various themed levels, like industrial zones and mutant slums, to eventually confront the villain Lord Sluggo. The pacing is relentless, and the difficulty can feel unforgiving due to limited continues and aggressive enemy placement. It feels like a chaotic, bloody scramble from start to finish.
