Game Overview

Exchanger came out for the Game Boy in 1990, developed by Atelier Double and published by Irem. It was part of that wave of early puzzle games that tried to do something a little different on the handheld, fitting right in with the system's growing library of thoughtful, portable challenges.

You control a cursor to swap adjacent tiles on a grid, aiming to match three or more of the same color to clear them and prevent the screen from filling up. The core mechanic is simple, but the game quickly layers on obstacles; some tiles are locked and can't be moved, while cascading combos become essential for survival in later stages. The pacing is relentless, demanding quick decisions as the blocks pile up faster than you can manage. It feels like a constant, satisfying battle against a rising tide of colored squares.
