Game Overview

Famicom Mini - Vol 22 - Nazo no Murasame is one of those weird, forgotten Nintendo games that somehow ended up being way cooler than it had any right to be. You play as Takamaru, this samurai dude who basically runs through feudal Japan hacking up ninjas and creepy yokai monsters. It feels like Zelda if Zelda was on fast-forward—no puzzles, just non-stop slashing and dodging.

The difficulty hits hard right away (those respawning enemies are brutal), but there’s something weirdly satisfying about clearing a screen full of foes without getting hit. The whole thing’s got this arcade-y vibe, like Nintendo wanted to make their own version of a quarter-muncher but forgot to add the coin slot. Also, the music slaps—those chiptune shamisen riffs are stuck in my head forever.

Fun fact: This is where Takamaru from Smash Bros. came from, which makes way more sense once you’ve played it. Just don’t expect to beat it in one sitting unless you’ve got ninja reflexes.
