Game Overview

Family BASIC is this weird little piece of Nintendo history that basically turned your NES into a computer. Came with an actual keyboard—which felt ridiculous plugging into your game console—and let you write BASIC programs right there on your TV. I remember spending hours trying to make terrible little games where a block would move left and right, feeling like some kind of programming genius.

The manual was all in Japanese, so unless you could read it or had a friend who did, you were mostly guessing at commands. Still, there was something magical about typing in code and seeing your Mario-playing machine suddenly display your own janky creations. The graphics were obviously super limited, but that just made it more satisfying when you got something working.

These days it's more of a museum piece than anything practical, but it's wild to think Nintendo ever shipped something like this. Definitely a cool artifact if you're into retro tech oddities.
