You start off as this warrior embroiled in ancient Chinese mythology—demons, gods, the whole deal—and the pixel art immediately grabs you with these rich reds and golds that just scream "90s Asian RPG."

The combat feels weighty, like your sword swings actually connect, and there’s this satisfying crunch when you land a hit. It’s not just mindless slashing, either—you’ve got special moves and magic that actually matter, especially when you’re up against some of the screen-filling bosses. Ever fought a dragon that takes up half the stage? You will here.

What surprised me was how much story they packed in. It’s based on Fengshen Yanyi, so if you know the tale, you’ll spot characters and twists, but even if you don’t, the game does a decent job pulling you in. Feels like playing through an old-school wuxia flick, complete with dramatic showdowns.

Definitely a must-try if you’re into retro action RPGs with a unique flavor. Just don’t blame me when you start hunting down a physical copy.
