Game Overview

I remember picking up Shui Hu Zhuan for the Sega Genesis back in 1996, a time when the console was still home to some surprisingly deep action games. It was developed by Neverland, and it stood out for adapting a classic Chinese novel into a side-scrolling beat 'em up. While not a household name, it had a certain charm that felt distinct from the usual Final Fight clones.

You control one of several heroes from the Water Margin, each with their own weapon and fighting style, as you brawl through waves of soldiers and bandits. The main goal is to clear each screen of enemies before moving forward, often breaking objects like barrels to find health or coins. One of the best mechanics is the ability to juggle foes with repeated attacks, and you can even bet your collected money between stages to upgrade your gear or recruit backup fighters. The pacing is fast, and the difficulty can spike unexpectedly, especially when dealing with swarms of opponents or tricky boss patterns. It feels chaotic and satisfying when you and a friend tear through levels together, filling the screen with combos and special moves.
