Game Overview

FIFA Soccer 95 came out for the Sega Genesis in 1994, developed by EA Canada. It was one of the earlier FIFA games on the system, building on what the first one started but with some key additions that made it feel less like a tech demo and more like a proper soccer sim. You could tell they were figuring things out, but it was a solid step forward at the time.

You control a full team of eleven players, switching between them to pass, tackle, and shoot. The main goal is to score more goals than the opponent, either against the computer or a friend. A couple of big changes were the introduction of actual diving animations for goalkeepers, which made saves feel more dramatic, and the ability to save your progress to a battery-backed memory, so no more writing down long codes. The game moved at a decent clip, not too fast but not sluggish, and scoring felt rewarding when you set up a good play. It just felt good to finally have a soccer game that remembered your season progress.
