SNK Corporation released Fighting Soccer in arcades in 1990, a time when sports games were starting to experiment with more aggressive, arcade-style action. It fits right in with that era's trend of taking a familiar concept and twisting it into something faster and more chaotic.
You control one of several national teams, each player a large sprite on a small, single-screen field. The main objective is to score more goals than the opponent, but the real focus is on the physical combat. You can shoulder charge opponents to knock them down, slide tackle to steal the ball, and even punch or kick other players when a fight breaks out. The pacing is frantic, with the ball constantly changing possession amidst the brawling. It feels less like a sport and more like a street fight where a soccer ball happens to be involved.
