Flight of the Intruder came out on the NES in 1991, developed by Imagineering Inc. It was part of that wave of movie and book tie-ins that showed up on the system, trying to capture the feel of naval aviation from the source material. It didn't stand out graphically, even for its time, but it had a specific, serious tone that separated it from more colorful shooters.
You pilot an A-6 Intruder, a two-seat attack aircraft, through a series of missions over Vietnam. The main goal is to complete your assigned objectives, which usually involve bombing specific targets or engaging enemy fighters. The gameplay shifts between an overhead map for navigation, side-scrolling combat sections where you dodge flak and missiles, and the notoriously difficult carrier landing sequences that require precise speed and alignment. The pacing is methodical, not frantic, and the difficulty is steep, especially during landings. It feels like a genuine, if sometimes frustrating, attempt to simulate the pressure of a combat pilot's job.
