Gain Ground is one of those Sega Genesis games that looks simple at first—just get your little soldiers across the screen—but then suddenly you're sweating over which character to use because that knight with the lance is useless against flying enemies, and the archer keeps getting cornered. You start with just three fighters, but you can rescue more mid-level if you're quick (and lucky).
The real hook is figuring out who works where. Some stages practically beg for the ninja’s throwing stars, while others turn into chaos if you don’t bring the guy with the flamethrower. And good luck against the bosses every 10 levels—those fights get brutal fast. It’s got that perfect mix of arcade action and “wait, maybe I should’ve picked the samurai instead” second-guessing.
By the time you’ve built up a roster of 30+ characters, you’ll still panic when your favorites die permanently. The game doesn’t mess around.
