Gain Ground came out for the Sega Genesis in 1991, developed and published by Sega. It was one of those games that felt a little different from the usual platformers and shooters of the time, more like a methodical, squad-based action puzzle. You don't see many games from that era that mix real-time combat with such a strong emphasis on tactics and unit selection.
You control a team of characters, each with unique weapons and movement speeds, across a series of single-screen stages. The goal is to either eliminate all enemies or reach the exit, and you can rescue additional characters by touching them before time runs out. The pacing is deliberate; you have to think about positioning, enemy attack patterns, and which character best counters the threats on screen. It feels tense and strategic, especially when you're trying to shepherd a rescued character to safety while under fire.
