Gain Ground on the Sega Master System came out in 1991, published by Sega. It was one of those methodical, squad-based action games that felt distinct from the faster platformers and shooters common on the system at the time.
You control a team of characters, each with unique weapons and movement speeds, and guide them through screen-by-screen stages filled with enemy soldiers and obstacles. The main goal is to reach the exit in each area while defeating foes or simply avoiding them; if a character dies, they're gone for good unless you rescue them in a later stage. You switch between available fighters on the fly, adapting to different threats with short-range brawlers, long-range archers, or other specialists. The pacing is deliberate, almost tactical, and the difficulty comes from managing your limited roster across many hazardous screens. It feels tense and rewarding when you finally clear a tricky stage with your team intact.
