Gain Ground is this weird little strategy shooter from the arcade days that somehow works way better than it should. You get dropped into these small arenas with a squad of warriors—archers, knights, even a guy who throws boomerangs—and have to clear out enemies or just survive until the exit opens. The Master System version cuts a few corners (obviously), but it keeps that tense, almost puzzle-like feel where positioning matters more than reflexes.
At first, I thought it was just another run-and-gun, but losing your characters permanently if they die adds this weird pressure. You start hoarding the fast guys for later levels, then realize the slow tank types are secretly OP against certain enemies. It’s got that old-school “figure it out through pain” design, but in a good way.
Honestly, half the fun is unlocking new fighters mid-game and trying to keep them alive. The music’s a banger too, even on the tinny Master System sound chip.
