Play Galaxy 5000 Online
Quirky NES space racer where you can fall off tracks, hear silly crash voices, and race against crumbling courses. Controls take practice but it's weirdly fun.

Galaxy 5000 came out on the NES in 1991, published by Activision. It was one of those late-era releases that tried something a little different with the hardware, a futuristic racing game that didn't take itself too seriously. It fit right in with the mix of ambitious and oddball titles that were still trickling out for the system.
You control a low-slung hovercar, racing against a clock and a rival on winding, multi-level tracks suspended in space. The main goal is simply to finish each course before time runs out, but the tracks are full of hazards; sharp turns can send you careening off the edge into the void, and sections of the course will often crumble away behind you, forcing you to keep moving. The controls are floaty and take some getting used to, making every successful landing after a jump feel like a minor victory. It's a game that feels both frustrating and absurdly charming in equal measure.
