The first level throws you right into it: dodging mechanical ninjas, bouncing off giant cat statues (yep), and figuring out which doors actually lead somewhere useful. Half the fun is the sheer randomness—like when you suddenly hop onto a mechanical sumo wrestler and plow through enemies.
It’s janky in that classic NES way, but the charm totally makes up for it. The backgrounds are packed with little details, and the music’s got this upbeat shamisen vibe that sticks in your head. Later Goemon games polished things up, but there’s something special about how unapologetically weird this one is. If you’re into retro platformers with personality, this one’s a trip.
