Play Gateway Online

You creep through tight corridors, poking at switches and dodging weird little enemies while the music makes everything feel bigger than it should. It’s Zelda if it got shrunk down and left in a closet to get slightly creepy.

Game Overview

Gateway was a Game Boy release from 1990, developed by Chris Gray and published by Mindscape. It arrived during the handheld's early years, a time when developers were still figuring out how to translate deep adventure games onto that small, green-tinted screen. It fits right in with that experimental spirit, offering a condensed but thoughtful take on the dungeon crawler.

You control a lone explorer navigating a vast, multi-level alien fortress room by room. Your main goal is to find a series of colored keys to unlock the path deeper into the complex, all while managing a limited energy supply that also serves as your health. The exploration is methodical; you push blocks to solve environmental puzzles, uncover hidden switches, and avoid or outsmart strange creatures rather than engaging in direct combat. The pacing is deliberate, sometimes demanding careful observation to progress, and the limited view of each screen makes the whole place feel claustrophobic and unknown. It feels like piecing together a quiet, slightly unnerving mystery all by yourself.
